Pre-Operative Surgical Site Preparation
It is our goal to provide quality, safe care by minimizing post-operative surgical infections.  Follow these steps before and after surgery for healthy healing.

Proheath Care:

We will provide you with 2 bottles of chlorhexidine Gluconate soap (CHG).
Shower the evening before and the day of surgery just before going to hospital.  You will use regular soap and CHG soap.  SHG kills germs on your skin for a longer period of time.

You will need your regular soap and shampoo, CHG soap, just washed washcloth, just washed towel(s) and just washed clothing and bedding.

Please note you should NOT shave near your surgical area for at least 3 days before surgery.  Even a slight nick or cut could cause your surgery to be postponed.

Evening before:

Shower as you normally would and turn off water.  Wet washcloth and apply the CHG soap.  Massage the soap all over your body from your neck down.  AVOID the head/face, genitals, rectum and open wounds.  Add more CHG soap and continue washing until the whole bottle is gone.  Wait 2 minutes and turn water on and lightly rinse your body.  Dry with a clean towel.  DO NOT use lotion, deodorant, powder or perfume.  Sleep in clean pajamas and sheets.  AVOID sleeping with pets.

Day of surgery:

Just before going to hospital, you will shower again.  Repeat the above bolded instructions.  Wear clothing that has just been washed.
Leave all jewelry at home.

Watertown Regional Medical Center

Watertown has implemented “Nose to Toes”

You will shower the night before surgery and put on clean clothes.

You will arrive 15 minutes earlier for your surgical procedure.  You will be assisted to wipe down your body with CHG wipes, have your nose wiped with iodine swabs, and will clean and rinse your mouth with a chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Please note you should NOT shave near your surgical area for at least 3 days before surgery.  Even a slight nick or cut could cause your surgery to be postponed.

If you have an iodine allergy you will NOT receive the nasal swab.

Leave all jewelry at home.

After Surgery:

Keep your surgical area clean and dry. Check the incision every day.

Wash your hands before and after you touch your dressing and incision. Follow your physician’s instructions for when to shower and clean the incision.

DO NOT soak in a bathtub, swimming pool or hot tub until site is completely healed. Do not use lotions, powders, perfumes or colognes on or near the incision.

Wear clean, loose fitting clothing and sleep in clean sheets.
